to get something new onto the blog i today will post some notes i recently found.
they are more than 5 years old and they are in german and i am not even sure which festival i wrote them on.... but they were some notes i took when i went to a festival.
i abstracted the names of the notes

einfaches ankommen, kein stau, 15min schlange beim reinkommen...

dafür viel wind und staub überall.
mir ist kalt trotz jacke.

ich verlasse SSSSSS und suche RRRRRR, dessen maehne ich schließlich im wind flattern sehe.
eine gar fidele gruppe ist da versammelt, darunter auch michi und OOOO.
instgesamt mit mir sind wir ca 8 personen. [unser platz ist direkt beim eingang bei der sicherheitskontrolle... leider ziemlich nahe den klos.... naja... die personen dort sind mir auch alles andere als wurscht. RRRRRR verteidigt sie noch stark, aber ... was ist zum verteidigen wenn leute auf fremde zelte pinkeln, die ganze zeit "kapseln" sich einrauchen und volle müllsäcke für den rausch als polster verwenden?]

ziehe in OOOOs zelt. viel staub finde ich dort.
es ist ca 12h. es beginnt (heftig?) zu regnen. alles verschlammt.
schweres vorankommen. wenigstens kein staub mehr im eiskalten wind.
80's matsch.b.sind dort. [!?!?! unleserlich]
ich hoere sie mir aus dem zelt an.
mit RRRRRR geh ich zu trail of the dead. nett!
trotz regen. doch ich werde nass. aber energie inklusive bühnenzerstörung! toll-

team sleep dann danach bei starkem regen & wind.
RRRRRR und ich müssen sie dennoch sehen, das hier ist schließlich ein festival. dann noch als deftones fans...].

das publikum ist aber nicht begeistert... naja, bei dem wetter.

interessant ist das chino nicht high wirkt... wie ich nach den jahren weiß nicht oft der fall bei konzerten wo er mitspielt.
er winkt sogar ins publikum, aber kaum reaktionen. ich glaube ich winke zurück.
die musik ist zwar fad, passt aber irgendwie wie wir finden super zum regen. ein guter auftakt, die stimmung passt.

dann gehe ich durchnaesst und frierend ins zelt. "mansbrother" und "la vela" verbringe ich im halbschlaf, dafür nur feucht...
RRRRRR gesellt sich zu mir und wir philosophieren.
ich lasse mir zuviel zeit beim nächsten aufbruch... nun dauert das anstellen zum reinkommen fürs nächste konzert lange...
ich sehe vielleicht die beatsteaks nicht, aber die stimmung ist sowieso schlecht [regen].
bei "wir sind helden" treff ich schließl. einen sch. sehr lustigen BBBBB [den burgenländer] mit vielen neuen und einigen bekannten gesichertn aus dem fidelen pamhagen zu denen ich mir die namen nicht merken kann. RRRRRRr ist erst durch die burgenländer verwirrt, aber jetzt mag er sie. ohne es zu wollen habe ich 3 bier intus [ist mit burgenländern nicht schwer], da ich aber den nun folgenden "wir sind helden " hype eh nicht ganz verstehe passt das schon sie betrunken zu erleben. habe eh mit BBBBB viel zu blödeln. die helden sind jedoch musikalisch gut dabei.
die burgenländer sind gut organisiert: die lassen sich sogar regensachen und gummistiefel organisiert zum festival fahren.
[eine möglichkeit bei einer eigentlich süßen burgenländerin zu... sagen wir punkten lasse ich feige aus. hach, zelt wäre ja sogar zur verfügung gestanden. was solls]

nun audioslave.
der regen hat nachgelassen. erstmals viele leute, es wird schon dunkel.endlich ist der soundcheck ok [ich glaube sie haben einfach lange gebraucht, oder meine ich die vorigen soundchecks waren alle schlecht?].
die audioslave lieder sind nicht so beliebt aber 1 lied ist "spoonman", damit spielen sie sich in mein herz, auch wenn morello eines von seiner perfekten doch einfallslosen solis hineintrillerst.
bei "sleep now with the fire" ist das publikum schließlich außer sich obwohl die stimme des sängers nicht so gut dazupasst.... musikalischer hoehepunkt ist eine schöne stark odastierte [?schwer zu lesen?] akkusistikversion von "black cold sun" die er nur alleine darbietet... einziger schönheitsfehler: seine saiten scheppern.

nun... system of a down! leider verliere ich RRRRRR. erste paar lieder gitarrenverspielen [wie ich jetzt weiß ist das normal beim gitarristen] aber.... DIE STIMMUNG! => und das obwohl der regen dämpft.
gut: kein wird mehr und nur leichte tropfen!

The new C++

Finally the new C++ standard is out.

Now some features a programmer coming from Java or C# to C++ was badly missing are finally there.

Some of the things I noticed that fall into that category are:

* FINALLY C++ has a foreach (i'll get back to that on an example below)
* no more posix- or quasi standard thread implementations needed: c++ now has its own threads!
* FINALLY c++ also has "final" and "override" keywords
* you can now use other constructors in a new ctor of the same class (less code redundancy)
* Delegates (which is my & Microsofts name for function pointers/function objects)

other significant changes include new semantics for non-copying (which can speed up program execution significantly) and "auto" variables, meaning that for

"a" will get to be an integer.

and then of course some things of the boost library now are part of the standard (like the shared_ptr).
what hurts me a bit is that networking seems still not to in the standard, but you would still need to rely on the somewhat bloated boost library for that.

there are many more new features, difficulty is always to know which ones are important. For example Lambda Expressions and also Regular Expressions are now part of C++11, but -like back when they implemented it for C#- I personally dont really see much need for it.

there are several cool things about this code.
a) it shows that you have a foreach
b) did you notice the ">>" in the vector declaration? thats possible now.
c) it shows that pure c++11 syntax embraces the STL: you dont need native arrays to use foreach. STL-collections (in this case "vector") dont feel like some alien attachment to c++; you can just use them. one less argument to disapprove the use of the STL.

Conclusion
Well, it took C++ a while for to reach the 21st century.
But now at least the standard is here. The STL is still nowhere near what is implemented for Java or .NET, but it gains significant&much-needed additions and a valid question is of course how-big-a standard library (in this case called STL) you want.

The publication of the standard is of course only the first step. Just because that is released does not mean one should immediatly jump onto the train (at least for business)
Now the compiler-creators need to do their job and implement it properly. We will see how much and when the big players will implement for their compilers. Because for example having standardized threads is not really anything good if it will now be supported by the major players.
Quite some features are already implemented for gcc. The same goes for VS2010, but as it came out a while ago their implementations are in an own "tr1" namespace. The new CTP of VS2011 has many {STL} features of the new standards already implemented , but we will have to wait and see if all the implementations on gcc/msvc/intel,... are completely compatible like they should be.

How I installed Skype on 64bit Fedora 64

yes... installing skype on fedora 64 bit is tricky.... there are some tutorials on the net, but i made it a bit different.

i downloaded the fedora package, and then i needed to install the following packages as well:

yum install glibc-2.13-1.i686
yum install glibc-2.13-1.i686
yum install alsa-lib-1.0.24-1.fc14.i686
yum install libXv-1.0.5-1.fc13.i686
yum install libXScrnSaver-1.2.0-1.fc12.i686
yum install 1:qt-4.7.2-8.fc14.i686
yum install qt-x11-4.7.2-8.fc14.i686

this then did the trick

after that i could run skype on the fedora 14 machine.

Antwort:
Nun fragen wir uns: was ist eigentlich ein dorf? die antwort ist, wie so oft, subtil versteckt.
dorf umgekehrt ergibt "frod", ausgesprochen "fraud".
(coincidence? you decide!)
anglophil seiend lernen wir also:
ein dorf kann wohl nichts anderes sein als eine fälschung. (potemkin war also damals schon ziemlich nahe an der wahrheit dran)
wir können also deduzieren, dass womöglich die genannten sprichwörter weitab der wahrheit (also im dorf der fälschung -ein trickreicher pleonasmus)
entstanden sein müssen.
schlimmer noch, in spanien! da wo die hunde wohnen! die mit den angeklebten L-förmigen pappmachéohren.

insgesamt folgern wir: das globale dorf kann allein etymologisch nichts anderes sein als ein hirngespinst pedigree pal fressender iberer.

i got back from my unannounced holidays.
vietnam is quite a nice country, in my all-time-favorites holiday ranking i would put it behind china,new zealand,mongolia,and turkey.

unfortunately i still have some things reminding me of vietnam that i would like to get rid of...
there is always a risk traveling to those sub-tropic countries.
they got quite some diseases there. and some of them quite nasty.
i hope i got lucky but will only know for sure next week....

anyways... when i was away i missed the release of the new ubuntu. i didnt upgrade yet, but i have to say i am quite suprised how unexiting the featurelist is.
i will see if and when i update.

Back from short trip to amsterdam

From my company I was sent to amsterdam for some days.
as of today, I came back.

conclusion: not every pre-rolled joint with hash is better than the ones you can produce yourself even if you are not that good and not that much in training in building one.

But at least "rick's café", the coffeeshop in amsterdam i have been in had acceptable music all in all.

and will be one of the coffee shops that won't be closed in the next few years by the government. come to think of it.... then i guess it would have been better to take one coffee shop that WILL be closed down. anyways....

Finally my live is enlightened

That is...i finally bought myself an android phone.life is no more dark and grey with my shiny galaxy s.after half the developers in my company bought it ,i knew the chances were small it would be a mistake.so now finally I am even online while I am at the hairdresser.
I knew I had to buy one after I created my first android app though I didnt even have a phone to test it on except the ones of my collages.

Ok,thats enough bragging for now.

experiencing a slow gdb in ubuntu 10.4 lucid lynx?

well... i was, too.
and if you heavily require debugging tools this can really get on your nerves. after updating to lynx i immediatly noticed the slower debugger.

but google popped up no results on how to solve this, or even if other people are noticing this....

so after playing around with it i finally solved the problem brute force:

i downloaded latest gdb (7.1) from http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/download/ and compiled it myself.

if you are a former windows user or unexperienced with that, dont let self-compiling scare you away:
compiling it for yourself is simpler than you may think:

download the .tar (with the browser of your choice), unzip it (easiest is with nautilus), go to commandline and type:
./configure

after its done, do:

make

after THAT is done you will have a gdb executable in the "gdb" folder!

nothing much to say actually.

i am only making an entry because i am sittig alone in my hotel room up here near oslo.

really nice architecture, but apart from that i havent seen much. unfortunately also not many legendary norwegian women :)

only other things i could notice apart from that was that after 20 pm you dont get any alcohol in the super market. ah yes, and its very expensive. good thing is most of my food and drinks are provided by the parnters of my company.

i am only glad i could arrive here by plane now that they stopped their stupid no-fly-in-europe policy. would have taken me ages and many changes of means of transport to get here via train.

Yup, I admit it. I am a die hard .NET fan.

And I am very exited about the mono project.

And because I migrated from the MS world to the Linux world I know what people accustomed to .NET & Windows development world expect:

Step by step tutorials.

And here is now one I want to share with you.

Setting up a fresh Ubuntu so you are ready to go with your ASP.NET application. You will still need to understand ASP.NET, you will still need to take care about specific porting problems of your application, but this can be understood as a general Getting Started:
I reproduced these steps on a clean Karmic Koala installation, so it might be different with other versions of Ubuntu.

Install Apache and configure it to run with Mono :
Do some commandline installation magic:
>sudo apt-get purge apache2 apache2.2-common
>sudo apt-get autoremove

>sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

create a simple testsite and put it somewhere where apache can see it. default location on debian/karmic would be:
/var/www/

so for example create a testpage there:

If you are able to see the website, the next steps are easy:
Create or open your web application with the monodevelop IDE .

Compile it.
You can create it with visual studio if you want and then compile it with monodevelop. But the important part is to compile it with monodevelop! Mono should be able to run windows compiled pages as well, but nevertheless I found it useful for ruling out errors just using Mono-compiled apps. A sidenote: Dont use any fancy-shmancy .NET 3.0 stuff or new web controls. stick with simple ones already present in visual studio 2003 or 2005 if you want to get your site up and running quickly.

So you compiled the stuff? Alrite. Now just brutally copy the whole contents of the solution folder to /var/www

(of course not all is needed but for this startup, just copy all stuff)

Check to make sure that now after the copying the default aspx site you want to to load resides really in /var/www.

Finally, fire up the browser again. open your default web-page and feel

poll should behave in exactly the same no matter whether the socket is blocking or non-blocking so there should be no trouble.

Back in the world

Yesterday evening i came back from my holidays. The transit from Fiji home took about 48 hours, with too many hours waiting on the airports Auckland, L.A. and Heathrow.... so i was quite exhausted when we finally arrived. Now I am fighting with my jetlag and tomorrow... well tomorrow work starts again. Hope everything at work worked while i was gone :)

my holiday were 3 weeks in New Zealand where me and my friends traveled the northern island and then 1 week in Fiji for relaxing. New Zealand is an awesome country i can highly recommend to pay a visit to.
its the first country i've visited so far where i would want to live.

i cant say the same about fiji.... but it was ok for a one week holiday there.

maybe i'll write some more about my holidays at some later point. we will see.

like i already once posted, i would love to have agent ransack running natively under linux on my ubuntu. i then settled for regexxer, but down the line i didnt like it.
i even eventually started to code one myself.
but then i found two quite decent search tools.

my favorite one is kfind.

seems that program is the closest you can get to agent ransack. at least it fullfills nearly every of my wishes in a search tool, so thats how i search now.

a more native-gnome approach would be the program gnome-find. though i think kfind is faster to use.

Qt Creator Tipps

I really dig Qt Creator (though my first euphoric stance has already relativated itself a little).

but because the IDE still is somewhat of an underdog, help in the net is somewhat rare.

therefore i decided to give a short summary about how one can setup some important settings for custom makefile projects. (they also might come in handy for all other people using the IDE).
all my descriptions are based on my qt creator IDE version 1.2.1 used under ubuntu 9.04.
i am pretty sure some posted points will save people out there some time.

*) getting your source files into your project
your project will contain a .files file. open it up and put inside all additional files you want to have.
example:
your project is located in
/home/f/sources/testApp/
and you want to have a file included in
/home/f/sources/CommonSourcecode/foo.cpp
Then add
./CommonSourcecode/foo.cpp
to .files and create a symbolic link in
/home/f/sources/testApp/
pointing to
/home/f/sources/CommonSourcecode/

done!

*) setting up include directories
your project will contain a .includes file. open it up and put inside all additional paths that you want discovered. one example entry would be
/home/f/sources/Includes

*) using scons with qt creator
using scons is easy. Press STRG + 4 to go to the projects view. choose the project, then in the build settings, choose build steps. under "override" put in the word "scons".

done!
*) setting up the debugger for your custom makefile project
Press STRG + 4 to go to the projects view. choose the project, then in the "Run Settings". Press the plus, add a name, with "browse" choose the already-built executeable you want to debug.

done!
*) get your qt creator to display #define correctly
do you have a preprocessor macro inside your code that qt creator greys out although it shouldnt? put all those #defines you want qt creator to know inside the .config file.
by example if you want it to not grey out
#ifdef _DEBUG
foo = bar;
#endif
then add
#define _DEBUG
to your .config file.

i recently came across a "new" IDE for C/C++ development. well, is "Qt Creator" really new? not exaclty, so lets call it the underdog of IDEs then.

but because of my dissatisfaction with everything apart from visual studio i've so far used, i immediatly tried out the new 1.2.1 version of Qt Creator.

and boy, i am amazed! this is really a great IDE for developing C++ applications. The name is a bit irritating because it implies its purpose is to create QT apps.

well, maybe it is, but its also very good for "normal" apps. till now i have used eclipse. i hate it but i sticked to it because of its good parser and syntax highlighting. plus the debugger is capable of showing you the base classes members of your instances and resolves the type. this made it the best IDE i knew so far. but now i am more and more working with qt creator. so here a small comparison between qt creator and eclipse of the cons for me of both IDEs

*philosophy resembles a bit to the one of visual studio (projects/searching)
*add your doxygen documentation to the IDE for reference
*the best damn debugger there is usable under linux c/c++!!!

qt creator is very transparent in what it does. it took me a long while to figure out how i could use my custom scons apps&libs and the somewhat obscure file structure that is used in our projects with eclipse. it is quite lightweight and not that bloated like eclipse, there are only a few config files which are used to set all up.

qt creator is very fast in comparison to the devillish slow eclipse. building, starting the debugger, changing the views, searching. everything SEEMS fast. eclipse does not seem fast. eclipse is coded in java, qt creator isnt. plus qt creator is only for c++. these will be two of the major reasons for this.

i hate the inline search in eclipse. and i also dont like the "normal" search with its results window. ok, thats taste but i like it more the way visual studio and also qt creator does present the search.

another thing is the "project" approach in qt creator. i find the philosophy behind the eclipse workspaces and then included subprojects very confusing, even stupid. i dont get the benefits. and in eclipse, where is a setting stored? in the workspace or in project? and can i export it, and how can i export it to use it somewhere else?

in qt creator the projects of not-"automaked" projects have 3 relevant files. a project has some resemblance to a visual studio project.
3 files, manually editable. it is plain dead simple. plus, getting custom make projects work in IDEs is always problematic, thats not only eclipse. but it wasnt that difficult with qt creator.

want to include your doxygen help somehow in eclipse CDT? forget it. i even searched eclipses bugzilla mailing list. to no avail.
yes, it shall be possible in other IDEs like code::blocks ( i think it was codeblocks), but i didnt succeed to get it working. with qt creator? after 2 hours i had everything set up. now, i can press F1 when i am over myClassInstance->MyMethod() and instantly a window with the doxygen help will popup. aaah. how nice. this even beats visual c++.

but now comes the best part:
the qt creator debugger!
i always missed the top notch visual studio debugger that microsoft ships with their product.
i dont know about VS2003 debugger for c/c++ but from VS2005 onward the ms debugger definetly beats everything out there i could get running on ubuntu.
strongly worded if we look at debugging c/c++, the linux platform is 4 years behind microsoft.... until now. now there is qt creator.
this baby has built in STL debugging support. heaven on earth! you even can change the STL variables value for simple types!

if you are capable of, you can even write your own helper functions for using it with qt creator to visualize your data types in your own preferred way. this can be done via adding the appropriate c++ code to your
qtsdk-2009.03/qtc-debugging-helper directory. there you find a gdbmacros.cpp file.

of course qt creator is not perfect. syntax highlighting is not as good as in eclipse. nonetheless its still better than what visual studio users are used to. another problem is with my ubuntu (coming with gnome) there are some visual quirks. then there are also problems with the debugger. on certain code it may crash, like when he tries to resolve an unititialized STL iterator.

despite small issues, i just can highly recommend to try out this IDE. especially if you come from windows. it is also an IDE where you have already a WYSIWYG editor included for building GUI apps, also something you wont find often. i havent really tested it though because i tend to write C# apps if i need GUI or use exising wxWidget apps but it looks&feels professional.

so give it a try!

My first working weekend

It was time.... after working for nearly four years now I had my first weekend that I needed to work.
The first 48 hours I had a total of 7.5 hours of sleep
And now its sunday, i'm done and am now waiting in a cafe to go back home. but i have some more hours until my taxi goes to the airport.

man i'm tired. plus the benefit was biased: it was not really the most successful weekend.

it was cool that i got some experience out in the field, but this working hours... no thats nothing for me.

btw i am currently playing around with mono quite a bit.
plus i am playing around with SDL.NET, which i think is a quite cool and simple framework.
though nothing compared with microsofts framework you have real cross plat´form compatibility.

when working with it i found also a nice-nice c# and sdl.net game that you should try out:
dyson

go check it out. it also should work under linux thru mono, but when i tried it it crashed.
well, i sent the developers a crashreport and a coredump.
they didnt send a reply though.

dyson is a RTS game. can somebody explain to me why there are no reasonably high-level written
open-source RTS games out there??? the only one matching that criteria out there being either developed in c++ or C# out there is Glest. which i dislike....
i'd kill for getting my hands on some c# RTS sourcecode to play round with. if anybody knows one, please tell me.

dual screen solution on ubuntu 9.04 jaunty with nvidia

after updating to the new version of jaunty of course the dual screen stuff did not work anymore. the xorg.conf couldnt be read anymore, and even couldnt be backed up....

anyways, after update was complete i needed to play around a bit.

to get dual screens in jaunty running again with synergy i then found the folowing solution:

i started System>Administration>"Hardware Drivers", activated the revommended NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 180), rebootet and then started nvidia-xconfig.
now i started System>Administration>Nvidia XServer Settings, enabled under "X Server Display configuration" the second screen again, changed the configuration to "TwinView" and everything was fine.
Seems ATM i am not using Xitami extensions anymore.

now only thing that needs to be done after update is is... i need to get my broken gcc running again....

after my update from hardy to jaunty (with middle-step updating to interprid) i was surprised to find that the build-essential package wasnt installed any more. after reinstalling... i still cannot compile, but i will will have a look now

Getting Synergy (Windows Server) to work with a dual screen Ubuntu Synergy Client

Today I had a hard time after I tried to change my synergy solution.
Before I had a WindowsXP-Ubuntu solution where 2 monitors where on the XP machine that acted as the synergy server and one monitor on the ubuntu machine. I now decided to move one of the monitors to ubuntu (for display-quality reasons).

At first i had a hard time getting my Ubuntu Hardy Heron to work with 2 screens and I took some wrong turns but I finally found my solution:
There are already many tutorials on the net, and luckily my Ubuntu machine has an nvidia card inside which made things easier:
Here is what worked for me:
I installed nvidia-settings application via classic
sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings

and then ran it with sudo. Here I activated my second screen which is running now.

Hooray dual-screen usage! But unfortunately Synergy did not work properly anymore.
Synergy switches screens between my first ubuntu screen and my XP screen, but it cant reach the SECOND ubuntu screen.

when using the "--display" option with synergyc program, I could convince synergy to use the second ubuntu screen, but then the first ubuntu screen would not be reachable....

I then tried to use the (optional) Xinerama support in the nvidia X-Server Settings, but when doing this synergy skipped half of my first ubuntu screen and immediately stepped to the second ubuntu screen.

I took a deeper look into the synergy documentation and finally found my solution:
using the (optional) Xinerama support in nvidia with an exotic synergy option!

at first, I checked the "enable xinerama" checkbox in the nvidia-settings program. Then I manually changed the config file of my windows synergy server. You can find that config file by pressing the "Info" button in the Synergy Server application.
In that file I added the option
xtestIsXineramaUnaware = false
in the "Screen" section under the name of my ubuntu machine.

Finally all screens work!

I am pretty sure this description can help some guys to get their system running. Good luck for you :)

SocketCC and Monodevelop

I had another request for the socketcc port recently. It is interesting how many people are interested in it. But definetely not surprising! :) I was quite right with my suspicion that there is a big need for having such a library.
But this time is a bit special because the guy who requested it is looking for re-implementing the ipV6 functionality.
One can find his post in one of the blog entries about socketcc.
He seemed to be quite enthusiastic to work on this as soon as he has time. I already sent him the sources, now I am curious what will come out of this. I was surprised when i just found out what additional features we have already put inside socketcc that were not inside the original library. I even now found some forgotten code where I played with some "Ping" class which i wanted to add to the library. its even working in some way, but i stopped development when i didnt need the functionality anymore.

I would very much like to see the library all (and the effort we put in this) to be strong with (nearly?) all the initial features in it again to be available to the public.

A OO cross-platform approach to sockets for C++! If this gets sturdy, this will be powerful indeed....

Today I discovered that there is an unstable debian package for monodevelop 2.0 Beta 1 linked from the monodevelop site. was it my whining at the foodformonkeys.blogspot.com site where i released my frustration about no-debian-package being present? i will never know :) but i am certainly very happy we now have a .deb package! I immediatly tried to install it.
Unfortunately my system at work does not fullfill all the required needs, and because this is my development pc I will not install a unstable libc library just for testing out monodevelop.

so i will need to test it at home on the weekend. hopefully i find time for it....

Color Haze in concert

On the 14th Color Haze played in the arena. They were supported by the band rotor.
I was very much looking forward to this concert. I got tickets around christmas and counted the days till the 14th with anticipation.... I may have to add that I regard Color Haze as one of the 3 best active Stoner Rock groups.... if not the best. And they are a great live band! So my expectations were high.

It was one of the best concerts I've been to for a long time. The new album of Color Haze shows that the band definetely progresses their music! One of their songs on their new album "All" has support by a hammond organy. It reminds me of some santana tracks that I know.
All the songs on the album are good. But the ones they played live were even better there. Longer versions with such an energy.... just great.

Rotor was the band playing before Color Haze. I heard some songs of them already of their ablums, but they kicked ass live. They have no crowd-participation, but they make a hell of a sound! I talked with some guys afterwards who liked the performance of Rotor better than the one of Color Haze who followed... Rotor are also very good from a technical point of view!

I was very pleased when I found out that the concert was sold out. This is definetely a good sign for Color Haze(/Rotor). After the concert I talked with the band leader, who is also the owner of the Elektrohasch label on which the band is distributing their CDs. On the 13th they were playing in Linz in front of 500 people. The concert was sold out to. my hopes are with them that they are on their way to bigger success. This would not only be good for them but also good for Stoner Rock!

Monodevelop Beta 1 is out

Yes, finally it is there. If you read roadmap I think this month the final version was planned.... but I am happy that we at least have the Beta! Still I very much would like to test it out. Unfortunately there still aren't any .deb packages that I could get a grip on!

This is something I dont understand: if I have a beta of a software, I would like many many many people to test it so I will get may bugreports so I can then bugfix more efficiently. For this they should provide debian packages and packages for red hat based systems!

Ok, I do not know the internal structure of the monodevelop development team, maybe they just don't have those ressources to get this done.

Well, I will patiently wait and search the net until some .deb files get available! I cannot wait to finally be able to write me some of the tools I so desperately want for linux!

first versions of the new monodevelop are out. boy oh boy i cant wait....

on the official site you now also will find some installers. Unfortunately only for SUSE and stuff, no package for debian.

It has some drawbacks though: i didnt find a package for the debugger add-on yet, so if you depend on deb packages because you can't or don't want to build yourself (like me), so i still need to wait.

eclipse problems with ubuntu hardy heron

i had pre-christmas at work when after coming from my holidays i was presented with a new intel quad core pc. my colleages even already had installed a parallel XP/ubuntu on it. great, i thought "i can immediatly start working!".
as long as the new monodevelop is not released, i am still stuck with eclipse (ganymede ). all i now had to do was i needed to install ganymede...
after downloading ganymede from eclipse homepage, i fired it up but was very confused: eclipse behaved very sluggish.... ok, i am used to it behaving sluggish from my old machine (a p4 2100 with ubuntu), but i thought it should be quite fast with the new cpu.
but i could barely work in a normal way: when doing a search, after pressing the shortcut i needed to wait for like 2 secs until i could press something that he'd recognize.
and then after some time eclipse would crash with a "out of memory" exceptions. it also crashed sometimes with some other exceptions. this behavior and the fact that eclipse was so slow was unacceptable for me. I could not work that way so i investigated.
after i had the same problems with the ubuntu-native-eclipse 3.2 that one can install via synaptic i decided to deinstall java: after all, eclipse is a java program so i thougt maybe my java installation was corrupt.
to my puzzlement, after deinstalling java, eclipse still started, without me having reinstalled java! now i began to dig deeper and finally found some answers and what i needed to do:

i found out that there is a GJC: a gnu java compiler. my eclipse run using the GJC instead of using the normal JRE. GJC comes preinstalled with ubuntu. It is not recommended using the GJC with eclipse according to eclipse documentation. Alas on my ubuntu, GJC seemed to be the default way java apps were run.
i then removed GJC via synaptic. NOW eclipse refused to run, it did not find any runtime to use. after this i installed the (sun) JRE via synaptic. after that eclipse run smooth!

the days that i use eclipse for coding are numbered because of the approaching monodevelop release date, so i already thought of just omitting giving tipps of how to use eclipse. but still, above entry might save some of you guys some time!

today i got back from my 3 weeks trip in cuba. it was an.... interesting trip. i had better though. it seems to visit cuba at the moment is not the greatest idea:
there are still many signs from the last 3 cyclones/hurricanes (of which i had the honor to experience the lastest). They also greatly affected tourism and thus: you. Plus they may have affected the mood of the people like 2 cubans pointed out to me.

putting that aside it might be wise to reconsider if you really want to go to cuba if one of the following facts apply to you:
* you dont speak spanish
* you get annoyed if you get approached every 10 minutes by somebody wanting to sell you something or trying to trick you
* you want to make a not-pre-planned trip with spontaneous decisions where to go and hate to remake your plans 4 times a week.
* you get annoyed by waiting in lines

maybe i'll post some things and facts about cuba in more detail at some later point. for now, i will now give in to the jet lag ;)

small update -amsterdam

thought i should post something after a that long time.
what has happened? quite some things, but i now decided to tell you one thing.

i was in amsterdam on holidays for one week. which was nice. thats a very special city we have there in the middle of west europe. i just can recommend you going thru the red light district once in the evening when you are there. plus, i can recommend to see the "all famous sex show".
i thought, well, once in a livetime one has to have seen a sex show, and amsterdam is definetely the best place to do that in a safe environment. if you wonder where to find it? just ask in a
tourist information center ^^
i was lucky because i attached myself to two american girls who asked and directed us to the right place.
second, i think everybody has to have been in a coffeeshop once... well, i did so thrice ;)
very nice trips i had.... on two of those occasions i was so completely lost... i forgot the concecpt of different languages for instance. then after some time i could remember that there ARE different languages and that the english language is one example of a language.... and i knew that i could speak it... but at that point i was only able to remember two words: "buy" and "sell" though i didnt know what they meant.
my to acompanees were a bit jelaous, because it didnt work that cool for them. one of them always wasnt sure if i made the stuff up i said. i guess i am lucky that that stuff is working so good for me (or am i?).
on one of my trips (which was in one of the "the doors" coffeeshops in amsterdam , i can highly recommend them if you are into 60s psychedelic music) i got in contact with pink floyd.
a thing on pink floyd:
until that day, i never understood pink floyd. i listened to their music, i watched their videos... i just couldnt grasp what it was all about. i also couldnt grasp the "coolness" of their movies. but definetely they were an important band werent they? if they werent, and everything they did was shit, why would they be a sooo important example of a psychedelic band?

now, in that coffeeshop i was trippin and then the guy there said "ya see this movie? ya know what it is? its pink floyd". and i thought : "wow... i never understood pink floyd beforehand.... lets look, now i am tripping, now i have different access to it". and after 3 minutes of watching i knew:
i still dont understand them. i still dont get whats so cool about them. well... but i tried ;)
ok, granted. the pink floyd MUSIC that was played while i was there sounded great while tripping.

so after one week of kicking my braincells out, i got back to vienna.

conclusion: very cool holiday.

not only for looking at prostitutes (man some of them are REALLY pretty!), but also for getting to see a nice city, and getting to see great paintings. (you HAVE to go to the Reiksmuseum and the van gogh museum if you are into arts!).plus i am astonished how SAFE you feel when you walk the streets there at nite.

A short summary about Open Source Command & Conquer

the last few weeks i got interested in how to write an RTS game. as an old die hard fan of c&c red alert (one) i began to search the net. i knew a few years back there was a project that took the released sourcecode of C&C and tried to evolve it.
So what is there at the moment?

The situation is somewhat confusing:

There are 3 projects under sourceforge:
1)freeCnC
2)freeRA
3)openredalert

those were created in that order. every one of them was created by taking the code of the former.

freeCnC
was the first project. as far as ive seen it was the also the biggest project. it seems to be dead currently.it aimed to support C&C Tiberian Dawn as well as Red Alert. they made the first port to linux, there was also support for multiplayer over tcp. it seems that (like for majority of such projects) being able to run it on linux was the utmost important target....
freeCnC is also relying on Boost (as well as on SDL and SDL_mixer). if you are not used to boost, i guess its a bit difficult to read.
problem of freeCnC was that the support for Red Alert was not that great. this then lead to the project called

freeRA
which just tried to implement red alert and dropped tiberian dawn. i didnt look at the code though. the maintainer of the project seems to have abandoned the project tough, nothing is happening there and the maintainer also does not seem to respond to mails. this then lead another programmer to create the project called

openRedAlert
which is at the moment actively maintained and developed. currently it only aims at single player, multiplayer is currently not planned. in openRedAlert, boost is not required anymore, i thought the code to be quite more readable, though one can see multiple programmers have already tampered with the source code. you can also definetly see that there was at least one "purist" at work, working very low-level.
You can get a bit confused with the project because for one it is hosted on sourceforge and then also on http://code.google.com/p/openredalert/

I began to look at the code and ported the stuff to MSVC9.0. it took me 2 days to get it to compile again with VC, and i also get to the starting screen. but when starting the mission i get a heap corruption assertion.... which is bad and seems to be inside since freeCnC like one guy on the http://code.google.com/p/openredalert/ site mentioned. and i certainly wont develop that stuff on gdb if i dont get paid for it.... that wouldnt be hobbydevelopment.....

other open source projects for Command and Conquer / Red Alert

on sourceforge i once found a c&c data extractor written in .NET. the guy that did that mentioned he may create a .NET port of c&c at some point.... maybe one can encourage him.

then i found an interesting project on http://mijav.dk/ which is a proof of concept C&C on .NET, but withouth the graphics.

btw: what i find strange is that i cannot obtain the originally released source code from ea. i dont find where i could download it....

interestingly enough:

there are NO really good open source RTS out there (i speak in general, not in particular about c&c) .... strange. the best shot one has would be one of the above mentioned projects. then a VERY good project is Mech Commander 2 for which microsoft released the code to demonstrate its XNA framework. It is great because it compiles out of the box. But on the other hand that game concept is not the classic Warcraft or C&C RTS game, so its not in my interest.

Next psychonautics.... salvia again

yesterday i used up the rest of my salvia divonorum.

at first i took about 1g of my 5x extract of salvia and mixed them with tobacco. after smoking it i felt quite dizzy, but hard to tell how much of that was because of the tobacco smoked without filter.

as no hallucinations took place i then rolled another one containing nearly no tobacco but dried pure salvia and another 1g of the 5x extract.

results? well, i felt dizzy, and inducing trance was easy.
on the other hand, still no hallucinations. this time though i did not feel as i was observed like i did last time.... so maybe thats a plus? :)
i then decided to make some music. it didnt really feel anything different than from normal.

i decided i will buy some more. mainly to have something at home if i decide to do some shamanistic journey again at some point in the future. for this, this stuff seems to be potent.

for the rest, i dont know..... it just doesnt seem to work properly for me

Dreamherb experience

2 days ago i tested some dried plants called "dreamherb" that i bought from azarius a long time ago.
since then they just lay around in my cupboard.
now i decided it was time to try it out.
after reading some preparation descriptions in the internet, i started:
i made myself some tea with about 7g of dried leafs. i left it in the hot boiling water for about 15 minutes.
at the same time i made myself something to smoke out of some other part of the dried leaves.

when i was finisehd with rolling i started to drink the tea. man, that was bitter!
that stuff is in the top 3 of the worst tasting things i ever drank! i had about 3/4 liter made but only managed to drink about 1/2 litre.
then i smoked what i had... created. the taste was not THAT bad, but anything is better than drinking these dreamherbs!
i felt a little dizzy afterwards, and then went to bed.

well what can i say? when i woke up in the morning i could not remember any dream at all. in fact i also had the impression i did not sleep very deep. one thing was strange though, i woke up half an hour before i needed to get up. this is highly unusual for me, normally i always sleep veeery long if i dont get disturbed.

conclusion:
what a dissappointment! of all the herbs i tried so far, the dreamherbs were the worst. i just wonder what i will now do with the remaining 40g...

the new approach to copy protections for computer games

i noticed in games forums that nowadays the gaming industry changed its approach to copyprotection in some way.

brief outline of the situation:
so they can sell many many games, gaming companies give almost all games copy protection mechanisms. those SHALL prevent people from copying the games. alas that idea has a problem:those mechanisms for protecting are fascinating themselves. this means that there are people interested in those mechanisms: they want to understand them and then test their skills to see if they can outsmart them. in my opinion this is completely understandable.i admire the brains those people have. and i am most certain that they do not care for the games at all. (plus thats what they say).if you are capable of cracking those protections, you are not the kind of guy to waste time with playing computer games.
fighting against game cracks seems to me like a battle the gaming industry will always loose in the long term.and the irony is: the people cracking it are not interested in the games. they dont play. but the gaming industry authorities did not realize that fact.

plus those copy protections are stupid:there ARE people out there that own the games and who cannot play, or have long loading/startup times because the protection mechanism do not work properly. in my opinion this is inacceptable, companies should not be allowed to do this. but thats another story.

whats new
so what the gaming industry now does:copy protections nowadays seem to come in 2 levels. first level, is this classic protection i just talked about. the game will not start if the original cd/dvd is in the drive.this is were those classic "nerds" have their play. they crack the game for the sake of cracking. now the game can be started and played.the second level of protection (and thats something new) is now implemented in the game world itself.
though the game starts, there is still some protection active: the game checks itself and tries to see if it is cracked. if so, it will just continue to work BUT will alter the game a bit. example: in the new game "drakensang" this will mean that one just cannot complete a mission.some key persons will just not appear. in "Silent Hunter 4", a submarine sim, this will mean that after some time the own crew are only 2d sprites instead of 3d models.
this is highly intelligent by the gaming industry: to discover that the crack did not completely work one would have to play the game for some time. and even then one cannot be sure if strange behavior by the game is either just a normal bug or a copy protection. plus this makes the game even more attractive for the gamers to buy: to get the full experience (as they already got hooked on the game by playing so far to notice the protection). by this cracked games even more get to be what they are: better demos of a game so that you then can decide if you wanna buy them.

i will just give a short update what happened....

friday, i helped my sister with moving into her new flat. but it was by far not that exhausting like on thuesday when we had to install the bed to the flat which was very big. on friday it was "only" the washing machine.

what else did happen? not much, i was at one party on saturday evening , which was quite nice. now that i am in the middle of moving out/searching for a flat i look at flats that i go to differently :)

party was nice, but i hated it when i realized that there are only couples at the party. normally i dont mind. it was also not like they were making out all the time or something. but still i didnt like it... :)

oh yeah, and i again got up on saturday at 5 pm... thats somewhat a strange time... i really need to think if i should change something about that.

sunday then.... was mostly a lost day, i got up at 2 pm, then some food. then i sat myself in the garden, the weather was so nice and hot.... messed round practicing blues with my guitar there. then i thought i should do something, else i will have the impression i have wasted the day. so i then moved to a friend of mine and we jammed together, me guitar, she drums. we had a nice session though we havent played together for about a month. i also told her that one guy at the party offered us a guy to play along with us. now we need 2 think if we want that.

Get mySQL running with MonoDevelop

Disclaimer:

for anybody trying to look into Mono, you might also want to be able to use a database with easy ADO.NET access like you are used to in MS C#. especially if you think about getting an ASP.NET site running in Linux, you will have a database you need to use.

MS provides nice dlls for Ado.NET for Oracle and MS SQL.

so if you want to use linux you will now also probably want some free DB that you can use.

mySQL is the way to go. Unfortunately this does not work out of the box. I spent some hours until i had accomplished getting mySQL to work with Mono with ado.NET.

this is something i did back a while, and already posted my experience in ubuntuforums.org but... well, to fill this place with some new acticle i will repost it here:

I am trying to get the mySQL ADO.Net provider Connector/Net 5.1 to run under mono. as far as mySQL says so, it should run under mono.

For this i followed the steps at

So I followed the provided steps but:
When i add a reference to the dll i can compile the program without problems.
But then the errors begin.

if you want to solve this follow these steps:

you will have to compile the sources for yourself, which sounds strange to any developer being used to .NET. but this is something that one has to do sooner or later when working with linux :)
and do not worry: here is a step by step guide:

downloaded the source code from
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/net/5.1.html

extract the archive and you will get a solution.you wont be able to open the solution in monodevelop. one of the projects is missing so monodevelop will abort (in the current version i have).
i solved this by opening the solution in visual studio. VS complains, but opens it up anyway. delete the non-existing project. now delete every project that has ".CF" and "Test" in it. They do not compile under monodevelop (at least not out of the box) and you dont need them anyways.
what should be left are the projects mySQL.Data and mySQL.Web. Those should be able to compile with a small tweaking:

Open up the AssemblyInfo.cs files in both projects and comment out the last line:
//[assembly: AssemblyKeyName("ConnectorNet")]

*Now open up the project under monodevelop.
*build it.
*no errors.
*hooraaay

i can use this own-built DLL without any problems in my projects. and you should be able to do so too!

congratulations! you are now able to work with ADO.NET/mySQL under Mono!

hope this helps some .NET freaks out there to save some hours and also helps spread out Mono and mySQL as well!

cant tell you how anxious i am about the upcoming release of monodevelop which will feature a ... debugger!
what is granted and comes so naturally for other programming languages, or programmers used to windows, seems not to be too common if you want to develop on linux:

yes THE one (and only) c# IDE on linux does not have a debugger at the moment.
It seems it got broken with some changes in Mono. How someone can really put out a new release of a language (lets now consider mono an own language) and knowingly loose his frontend-debugger by that but accepting that.... i dont know.

well the mono community did.

this also kept me from progressing with my interest in c# for linux. a language where i do not have a debugger is.... ridiculous.

but fear not! the new debugger is coming.... like you can read here. i cant wait for it to get released!
i finally want to develop some nice cross-GUI apps for linux! and i certainly wont do that with C++. everybody volintarily choosing c++ for that task is insane or has a very narrow understanding of... well everything :)

beware of stream programming!

if you ever plan to do cross platform programming in c++, avoid streams like hell, i tell you!

positioning inside streams, copying of streams, readbuf methods, calculating offsets.... some of these methods behave different on linux(32bit), linux(64bit) and windows(32bit), breaking your code big time.
i made the mistake to use them in the current project. but i wouldnt any more.

easy example: create some instances of different streams, write some data into the streams, then check what in_avail() tells you. make the same on windows and linux, and already you can get different results.
maybe later on i will post some example code.

finished porting socketCC to windows!

I have just finished the new and shiny extensions to socketCC. socketCC, the nice class based Socket library.... so now even more shiny! :)

the original socketCC library was mainly designed for linux. Mac OS support was added to it too, but you could not use it under windows.... awkward choice isnt it?
i therefore made it compiling and working with windows like i already said here. but now all bugs should be out and it works like charm!

the cool thing for all pure-windows VC coders out there is: there is a workable VS2008 solution, that can be compiled just like that, without the need for setting anything else up or understanding makefiles.
AFAIK there is no other nice free open library for windows that does this.

so heres a rough list of what has changed from the features of the original socketCC, (description for a deeper understanding of the original socketCC lib can be found in this Dr. Dobbs socketCC article):

• support for windows , tested on VS2005 and VS2008 visual studio compilers , (should work on Vista and XP)
• support for obtaining broadcast address / sending broadcasts , support for only sending on certain interfaces
• began changing comments to doxygen documentation style for being able to generate documentation
• (maybe) made some comments more clear

i did not have the time to make it perfect, because our target platform is linux so the windows implementation is sort of a bonus. this meant that i made some hacks and also omitted IPv6 support (some of our extensions we did to the library broke IPv6 functionality for linux as well anyway) additionally, i needed to use winsock2 and relied on some functionality only present in windowsXP and Vista (and probably win2k3).

because main target for us was linux with also-side-windows support, and easier readability of code desired, support for all other operating systems but windows and linux was omitted. but with this the library will be usable in 98% of all cases anyway, right?

i now sent a mail to the original author, Jason But, of the library and sent him my changes and am awaiting his response now, what his reaction is to this version.

In case you are interested in this class based socket library for windows, write me a mail or drop a comment. At the moment I do not want to just post it on the net for public download because the author claims that all changes then to be made public have to be made through him. As you see, to just set in online would be against his will. Plus: There would still be much to do on the library, like getting IPv6 support back! Anyone interested, write :)

Testing out ubuntu

as i am a IDE freak, always searching for the greatest comfort, i decided to test out Code::Blocks, also because i am still not completely satisfied with eclipse CDT (now version ganymede).
Code::Blocks seems to be somewhat an underdog in the IDEs, so i thought i might give it a try.
also because its an IDE that has a free plugin to develop wxWidgets with a sort of WYSIWYG (its called wxSmith).

so i then needed to look how to install it under ubuntu. installing something that cannot be obtained via the ubuntu package manager is always something i am uncomfortable with because it often.... fails :)
and of course... code::blocks is not installable via the package manager.
SOOOO.....

but in this case i found a nice and easy howto: "Installing Code::Blocks 8.02 on Ubuntu" that can be found here. just wanted to tell anybody interested. because it took some time until i found it...

now i just need some time to try it out...

i think rationate is in itself a nice (un)word. it is great because its reminding of familiar sounding words like the english words "ratio" as well as "ration" plus the latin word "ratio". keep all 3 meanings in mind before reading "rationate insanity"...

helmet & black mountain concert

well well, a most interesting concert.
black mountain was very good indeed. though their albums do not really touch me, their live performance was outstanding.
if you ever have a chance to see them, dig that style of music but dont really like their CDs, go there anyway. it worked for me :)

after black mountain, the crew began to prepare the stage for helmet. that was when most people left :)
like i expected, black mountain and helmet have very different fanbases, most black mountain fans did not listen to helmet, and vice versa.
fortunately for me, i like both styles so i got more out of my ticket than most.

when helmet started i was a bit perplexed because it was BAD. i then concluded that this was because of the big musical gap between what black mountain are doing in comparison to helmet:
this harsh, raw, purposedly dissonant music that helmet is doing did not sound RIGHT after a band like black mountain.
so me and my accompagnee needed some songs to get into it. then the concert was quite nice.
yes, it was quite nice: nothing more. helmet is not really a live band in my opinion.
plus i was astonished to find out that all songs were performed in higher tuning than on the album. i now suspect they remaster all their songs in the studio to make them sound lower than they are actually done.

what was nice about both concerts was that i felt so young:
most people in the audience were older or same age than me.

this is something i do not experience very often anymore at concerts :)

i was bored this evening so i decided to try the salvia divinorum i ordered more than a year ago on azarius as well as the salvia extract 5x i bought several weeks ago. though from a doctors side of view i shouldnt do it, but the heck with it. last time i tried salvia, taking it orally putting it under my tounge, i did not feel anything so i am not that respectful with that herb anymore :)
mainly because it does not seem to work for me, some people on the net were also saying it does not work for them. i then tried it orally one more time without expecting much results:

i put about 1/3 grams of the 5x extract under my bottom lip. after waiting 15 minutes without any result i continued:

with much effort i manneged to roll myself a "little friend" containing of mainly dried salvia, with just a shot tobacco and, about 1/4 of it, tagetes lucida.

it smoked itself quite fine, a bit harsh on the lungs, not as easy to smoke as normal pot, but easier than pure tobacco.
result: i felt dizzy for 2 minutes and i had to grin for about 10 seconds. but that was it.

no hallucinations whatsoever.

i still had the extract in my mouth.

i just 15 minutes ago took another 1/2 grams of the 5x extract and tried another method, without looking at the internet if it even can work:
i heated some butter and put the extract in there. mixed it through thorougly, then took the stuff and made myself some breads with that butter.
if you do this with grass, you can get very nice results, btw :)

for salvia.... well so far i do not feel anything. i dont think anything will happen, but it may take a while until oh my god wtfwtfwtf! those lights. i now see the world clear!
well... you might have guessed: just kidding.

it seems next time i will really have to take that extract and make a proper smoke with it, smoking the dried leaves does not work for me.

Looking forward 2 Concert Tomorrow

tomorrow Helmet will be playing in the Arena.

i am very much looking forward to that. curious to see if they play the oldschool stuff or much new things.
to get myself started, i listened to all helmet albums for 2 days now.

this is both good and bad:
the good: i get prepared for the concert
the bad: i get a slight depression.

at least thats what helmet does for me. i find helmet is a blessing: when i slide down the mood spiral, helmet can ease the pain very good. its very dry and hard sound can absorb much of a depression. but on the other hand, when i am in a good mood, it can also slightly get me down.

the second great thing about the concert is the other band thats playing:
Black Mountain, a very different band from helmet. but a band that i am very interested in too. its a very important band in the psychedelic scene it seems. i dont like their records but many of those bands are very good live nonetheless. so i look forward to hear them

Intuitive Console editor for Linux

when becoming a cross-platform novice, there was one thing that really disturbed me about linux that was so much better on windows:

the standard commandline editor(s) for editing text files.

if you are using gnome or KDE, the standard editors under linux (gedit/kedit) are better that the normal notepad under windows. but when it comes to commandline, the common windows-user is lost.

if you are a non-hardcore linux user you know what i mean:
vi(m) and emacs need to be LEARNED before they can be used.

what a normal windows to linux switcher wants is an editor like the good old MS-DOS Editor "edit".
what i want is an editor that i can simply USE without needing to learn it.

there are thousands of different flavors of software out there for linux so i thought it shouldnt be difficult to find an editor that is as intuitie as MS edit.
well, it was.
but finally after about two hours i found one thats quite comfortable that satisdfies my needs. with you might feel at home with it too:

the editor called jed.

just install jed like you would any other package in debian(ubuntu) with sudo apt-get jed. try it out and see for yourself if you need to use commandline editors one time or another but are fed up with emacs and vi.

i am a bit exhausted and sick after going out on sunday, then working on monday and going to the EM match in the main fanzone of vienna.
i wondered very much what happened to me in the last 2 years when i even put on some paint onto my face like those freaky soccer watchers do. it did not help anyway.

in work there were some things happening, plus i am fighting with synergy desktop sharing software with my newly updated hardy heron ubuntu edition in the company. some characters are not transported to the other pc, hell knows why. with gutsy everything worked.

so everything i could talk about now would be too much to... write :)

so i ll just leave it for now

Rape Eclipse projects to behave like Visual Studio projects

This blog entry might get you up and running with Eclipse if you come from Visual Studio without you having the need to immediately look at how to create makefiles or how the eclipse workspace philosophy works. I expect that you are somewhat familiar with Visual C++ though.

I like Eclipse. Well.... no, i don't. I like Visual Studio especially for C#, but Visual C++ has some drawbacks, especially when used to code cross platform non-.NET and without precompiled headers.

Still I don't know why so many people find Eclipse so great, but granted, it has a very decent code completion, nice automake and a very good syntax highlighting. I use it too. Its the next best thing ive tried so far to VS.
What I hate about it are the project- and workspace philosophies of Eclipse and that the program is somewhat slow.

Visual Studio projects/solutions are much easier to use and you grasp its concepts quicker and, most importantly, you are free to include any file you want into your project independent where it lies. Under Eclipse you may only include files into your project that are beneath the structure of your workspace or even project directory.... stupid.
But there are workarounds for that, but they are well hidden and they took me a long time to find them, but if you stick to this guide you can use Eclipse CDT projects like you are used to from Visual Studio.
This is especially vital if you want to work on a structure that was created for use with visual studio but you are now switching to eclipse! The great thing about the here described workaround will be that you will still be able to use autocomplete and syntax highlighting as well as automake!

This was tested with Eclipse 3.3 under Ubuntu with CDT 4.0 installed:

I take you have already a workspace created and eclipse started.
First, create a CDT project by File -> New -> C++ Project. Click finnish.
Use a name you like and choose a location you like
In your project workspace you will now see a Project with the given name.

Consider everything you see in the Workspace View like your solution you see in the solution explorer in Visual Studio. So lets say a workspace is somewhat the equivalent to a solution. The project (you just created ) is somewhat equivalent to the projects of visual studio. i wont explain the differences, but there is an excellent article on this by IBM called "An introduction to Eclipse for Visual Studio users". Just google for it.

Here now some common places of Visual Studio and Eclipse that you might need often but do not know where to find if you are just used to either ONE of those apps:
If you right click your project and enter the properties you are in a window that is equivalent to the "project properties" of visual studio (if you right click your project in visual studio solution explorer and choose "properties") as well as to some things found in Visual Studio under
Tools -> Options -> Projects and Solutions.

The Point "VC++ directories" in visual studio that is found under "Projects and Solutions" can be set up in eclipse by:
right click your project and enter the properties -> C/C++ Build -> Settings -> GCC C++ Compiler -> Directories under Preprocessor,
you can set preprocessor statements there like you are used in visual studio under
Tools -> Options -> Projects and Solutions -> C/C++ -> Preprocessor.

The additional libraries to be linked, found in Visual Studio under
Tools -> Options -> Projects and Solutions -> Librarian -> Additional Dependencies are under eclipse under
right click your project and enter the properties -> C/C++ Build -> Settings -> GCC C++ Linker -> Directories

By the way the equivalent of the .sln and the .proj files of visual studio are the .project and .cproject files under Eclipse CDT.

so far so good. by the decriptions above you should be able to include all the libraries and header files into your to-be eclipse project how you need them.
so lets get to include some files.

now, under VS we are used to just drag some C++ files from some place on the file system via explorer into our project and they are compiled with the rest of our files (if visual studio is able to find the include files that is. see above how to set up the paths to discover the include files).

under eclipse you cannot do that the files would need to lie beneath your defined workspace path (like already said). but you can work around that and add files from somewhere on your file system into your project anyway, but this is hidden and can be found at a very unlogic place in my opinion:
right click on your project -> New -> File -> Advanced -> check "Link to file in the file system -> Browse -> choose the file you'd like to use.
The file is now included into your project!

Provided Eclipse can resolve the include paths of your cpp file, your project now builds!

Practicable search for files/inside files under Ubuntu

Finally i found a nice tool to search for files under linux!
under windows i am using Agent Ransack, a very comfy and efficient tool for that purpose. I dont want to use grep under linux for my searches then i always would have to concentrate on the syntax, so i was looking for a nice tool that is a sort of to Agent Ransack under Linux, so i'll have a tool that does the job similar to my favorite search tool. ( i also dont want any desktop search app with all the overhead they seem bring)

the next best thing i found was regexxer that can be installed by "sudo apt-get install regexxer".

unfortunately you will not be able to use wildcards with regexxer but use regular expressions, which are a bit... more complex. but still it is the best alternative i found and, compared to some other linux apps, quite self explanatory.

Streams in C++: a warning

When beginning to think how some packing alorhytms for the project i am currently doing in my company, i decided to go with streams as the contained for the packed data.

why?
first, i knew some stream working from C#,
second, i knew the packed data would be then sent over the network. in C# you can then quite easily convert your stream to a network stream and just send THAT over the network. out of some reason i thought that there surely also is some network stream class in c++.
third, back when i learned programming in colleg we were doing streams and they told us we should use them. if i think about it now i think our professor had a certain crush on streams.
fourth, i needed something abstract, where i just could put more and more data into easily and in the end, get everything out again. streams seem to be made for that right?

ok, now let me tell you:
if i could choose again, i would avoid them like a christian avoids hell.
why?
not only me but also my colleages find streams-programming is very counter-intuitive to work with.
* completely understanding the concept of streams is not easy.
* streams are not easily worked with:
- you cannot just copy a stream.
- you cannot even easily insert data somewhere at the stream.
- if you do something wrong you get funny compilation errors that do not really tell you what you did wrong (create a method that takes a stream reference as an argument , forget the "&" and look at the error message)
-you cannot easily extract data out of the stream, being it the data itself or things like the size of the stream. some things may even be impossible....
-different types of streams seem to behave differently when you shift data into them: this one i just discovered and still need to figure out

but the worst part is:
* there are many parts where streams behave differently under windows and linux!
so cross platform development becomes difficult:

example: streambuf methods (used for things like positioning the read/write pointer in an associated stream) like in_avail() and pubseekof() and pubseekpos() will return you different positions/sizes under windows and linux.
i still do not know why nor what to do about that. they also behave differently on 64-bit machines:
the same program under ubuntu on a Pentium4 compared to some 64bit - server monster running some linux distribution have the "get pointer" of the readbuffer on a different positions, thus making your logic fail.

maybe i'll post some of the anomalies in more detail in the future.

Porting SocketCC library for Linux to Windows

about two weeks ago i began porting the SocketCC library for Linux and Mac to Windows.
SocketCC is a free C++ class-based library for using sockets and was written between 2001 and 2003 by Jason But.
(You can download the original from the Monash University site here ).
It is a nice small, free and clean library that suited our needs in the company for the project we are doing right now. What some of you hardcore C and C++ programmers wont like though is the fact that is uses Exceptions :)
Alas, SocketCC was not working for windows, so i sat down to
first) make it compileable,
second) get the error codes also under windows,
third) make it runable under windows.

even with the hacks it took really some effort making it runable anyway. i will probalby sent my changes to the original author of socketCC at some time in the future.

all of you not knowing the winsock2 library but being interested in windows socket programming in native C/C++, check it out. If you cannot use the Java Framework or (much better) the .NET Framework for your network programming, its the next best thing there is at the moment if you want class based socket programming.
(I dont know about the support in python or stuff though)

i will probalby write some more later info about what i learned for winsock2 and also for SocketCC.

not even to the 50. anniversary of the austrian republic you could see so many flags of austria placed by private people.
not even on that (one would say very important) anniversary for this republic one could see that many flags of austria hung out on the streets compared to flags of the soccer EM hung out these days.

what does something like this hint you about this country? ^^

maybe i was looking for something more than just a fuck-buddy to put it plain simple, but i d be happy with that as well.

i think i am very uncomplicated.

somehow i am pissed if we first want to meet on saturday, then that gets postponed till monday for culture cinema, then that gets postponed, i propose thuesday for cinema, she says wednesday, i say ok, adapt my week-plans for that accordingly and then on wednesday she tells me we are going out with friends. then, on going out, she vanishes with them at 2:00am (instead of staying with me a while longer) for getting home right enough to then fetch somebody from the bus arriving in town at 4:30am. which i guess somebody else could have fetched as well. do i believe it anyway?

maybe thats her way of saying, "i dont want any more."

if its not then now i am not sure how i will react. do i want to put up with this?
if i knew from the start what an evening will bring in kindof... general, then its fine with me. if i am not shifted from one day to the next. "ah not today, altough i said so earlier, lets take this day(who needs to know if i have time anyway?)"

not to mention the intimacy signs i get and send out. too complicated to tell anyway.

but as it is, i now have to figure what i will do. if she still wants something, and i have reasons to think this is the case, do i really want to be easy to toss around without taking care?

Fencing -my new sport

today i went to fencing course the second time.

some time ago my sister and i decided we need to do something for our health.

yeah, many of us do so at some point or another.

for me, i just KNEW i should do something, but did not bother about it anymore. i do not really know any sport that has my attention drawn away from the fact that i exhaust myself while doing it.

one of two sports i know that succeed in getting me to forget the fact that i am exhausted is badminton. there are some phases when i occasionally play once every two weeks.

but fencing was always on my mind to try out. and because my sister now also wanted to DO something and suggested fencing, i was immediately like "yeah, lets do it".

so today was the second lesson. i have to say... i think its cool. it has something manly to it to fence :). yeah, and of course thats the fact why i like it.
its funny, it looks more easy than it is.... but of course, my body is a very uncoordinated bunch of flesh, because it does not have to do any sports. therefore it IS a challenge for me to FIRST commence a stab with my arm, and THEN make a leap forward.

anyway today i suceeded in getting my first bruise, looking very manly. its about 10 cm in my right upper arm and quite slim and very red. if you see it you are like :"wow! so you went fencing!? I SEE THAT"
what they do not need to know is the fact that it was not done by a rapier like one would guess but done by the wall that i .... failed to avoid when warming up and having to avoid getting caught....
anyway it sounds much cooler if i just say, i have that from fencing.

that ll also probably be the only explanation i will give to the cute romanian girl i will see tomorrow. mmmh, looking forward to it....
could not see her for nearly a whole week now, at first she was sick, then she said she had much to do. tomorrow we'll probably go
and see some cultural short movies in the cinema.
why not? i can enjoy that.

Why? Tthere are multiple examples: I’ll post one that annoyed me just some moments ago right now, multiple others may follow later:

It is an interesting fact that when you search things on the internet and you find resources to it which were written by some linux guys (or on linux but would also be usable in windows) they may post their code (in this case code, but I might also have found docs that way) for downloading.
How can you obtain the stuff? You find it in an archive. As a .tar, or as a .tgz. or whatever other wicked linux-packing formats there are.
Why use an open standard archive like .zip anyways? Just because EVERYBODY can open it?

Ok, i am not familiar, so: .tar/tgz may very well be open "standards", but whats a standard worth if 90% of all people are not able to use it on their PCs when there is another open standard like zip to use instead?

the perfect weekend

people who know me know that i rarely speak of a perfect day.
in fact i think i never called any day a perfect day till now.

but... i have to say the weekend (26th,27th) was very close to perfection if not perfect.

a cool race which i told you already, a cool party afterwards with nice friends, then sleeping long then going out again. having very nice conversations and a very nice girl.... party for me lasted until next morning when i accompanied her to her work. nice weather nice ... conditions ... some more sweet talking. man, i had to take care not to get too much into it.
it was also fun to watch all those idiots doing the vienna marathon on that sunday. all guys running by with already empty bodies, having a dire stare of pain on their faces... something to laugh about (but also wonder why people do that).

what a cool weekend that then itself started an also very nice week. though i have to say, work suffered a bit. but i dont care.

anyway too occupied to write much. too much going out.

when i finally decide what shape this blog will become in the future (private sort-of-public diary, or still more about work, or still being the hybrid in between) i may write in more detail.

Going kart....

yesterday i went with my working colleages to a kart-racecourse where we did a one hour race. everybody who's done this before knows that racing an hour is very exhausting. but very cool.

when the race was over it was decided: i came out first.

well, sort of... actually i came out 5th of ten participans, but:
winner was a guy from ORF (thats the public TV-station in austria).those guys are FREAKS, the orf has a sortof professional kart team that gets sponsored by some companies and they always win races that are made regularily. so he sortof raced noncompetitive.
second and third came out 2 guys from the rental department. they are also kindof regular kart racers, like participating each year in a 3 hours race and stuff. so no wonder they were better than me.
so then on fourth positition was my boss. and of course i cannot beat my boss ;)
what a dumb thing to do this would have been....

so you see, .... actually i came out first :)

afterwards i then went to a party. 3 friends of mine celebrated their birthday. it was fun though i was quite tired. at about 2 o'clock i then was brought home by some friends of mine that were driving my way home. today i slept till 17:30 ;)

now i make myself clear for the next party..... a romanian party :)

Tutorial for Compiling C++ on your PSP with Oslib (Oldschool Library)!

i finally managed to compile C++ code on my PSP.

i completely removed my development environment for psp and began reinstalling:
this time i relied on the MINPSPW project instead of doing all the cygwin stuff. after that i then used the makefile of Neko Grafico and now it compiles with C++.

I am not too happy with all the tutorials out there to get one going creating stuff for the PSP. Especially Oslib with C++. So here a HowTo to set up Oslib with C++ to run from the scratch.

This small turorial guides you how to get going creating C++ applications for your PSP with the OldSchool Library (at the moment of writing that is Oslib Version 2.10 Alpha) with Visual Studio Express 2008. At the end you will have a compiled program that you then can run on your PSP (if you know how). This tutorial will use the tools provided by the MINPSPW project. The advantage of this is that you will not need Cygwin for it to run. For getting this tutorial done you should not need any knowledge about Makefiles or toolchains as long as you are a bit familiar with visual studio and know what to do with the EBOOT.PBP that pops out after you compiled your program/project.
At first i assume you have Visual Studio (Express) installed and working and want to use it for developing Oslib. If you do not have so yet, go to
http://www.microsoft.com/express/vc/
Now you need to install the PSPSDK. But beforehand, you should install MSYS. It can be found here. Download the latest .exe and install it.
After you did the installation, a shell will open up asking you if you want to perform a post install. Press "y". When asked if you have MinGW installed you most probalby will want to press "n". At least you did not install MinGW with this tutorial (plus won't need it). The shell will now ask you to press ENTER. Be a good boy and do so
Now we finally need to install the PSPSDK.For this, go to http://minpspw.sourceforge.net/archives/cat_sdk.html and download the latest version. For this tutorial i took the version PSPSDK 0.7.2., but if there is a newer one i'm pretty sure that'll do just as well.
Download the .exe and install. In the installer, dont forget to tick the checkbox saying that you want VS support.
For a detailed installation instruction, a tutorial on how to install MINPSPW with VC can be found on the jetcube site. You should follow that tutorial for making sure that you set up Visual Studio correctly. At the moment this tutorial is on http://www.jetcube.eu/archives/2008/02/entry_74.html.
Follow the tutorial until the end.
Now it's time to compile in Visual Studio with Oslib. For this, go to http://minpspw.sourceforge.net/archives/cat_devpak.html.Search for "Old School Lib DEVPAK".At the moment of writing the version is "OSLib-2.10". Download it and try to execute it. The installer will probably mourn that some other package is missing and will abort installation. Remember the name of the missing package, and go back to http://minpspw.sourceforge.net/archives/cat_devpak.html, search for the name the installer mentioned, download it and install. Now try again to install the Oslib package you already downloaded.
finally after some tries (after 2 more package-installs for me), the oslib package installer proceeds with the installation. After it sucessfully installed, open up VS. Create a new Makefile project similar to the one that was described in the tutorial (the one that can be found at http://www.jetcube.eu/archives/2008/02/entry_74.html.
in a completely new folder.
Add a main.cpp file to the project.
Go to the oslib wiki page and take the hello world example found here :http://oslib.playeradvance.org/doku.php?id=day2
copy-paste the code to your main.cpp
to test if you really can compile C++, insert the following code into the space below the line saying
"PSP_MAIN_THREAD_ATTR(THREAD_ATTR_USER THREAD_ATTR_VFPU);"
and above the line saying
"int main()"

The code that you should insert should be something C++ proprietary so i suggest:

now open up the Makefile in your project folder, or if there is none existing yet, create one. Creating it is simple: just create a file with the name "Makefile". Now open it up. Copy paste the following code inside that was provided by Neko Grafico (for which he deserves my special thanks).

That's it, if everything was done correctly you should now have an EBOOT.PBP that you can copy onto your PSP!

well not much to say.
this is a rather irrelevant entry, you can skip it ;)

friday evening i was just chilling in front of the tv.

saturday i slept long like always, then went out on a date and saw some original but somewhat strange piece in the theatre, beforehand went out for dinner.

afterwards i departed with my sweet company, drove to a friend and we went on a pub tour. we found a nice alternative pub i didnt know of before:

a nice place and they had 60s night so they already had my heart. beer not expensive, maybe a bit small. and not many girls. afterwards we went to the B72 where we then both felt a bit old:
the music was crap which we arent used to in the B72 but it seems this is already like that for a half a year or so. afterwards we went to the Chelsea, there it was better. at 4 or something they threw us out.

sunday then was just getting the alcohol out of my bloodstream and sleeping.

so far so good, see what the week brings.... oh yeah, the Isis concert. probly, i ll be there.

Taboos of the world

Think Geek gave me some inspiration yesterday when i ordered some stuff.
Every country has its list of "taboos" and Japan is no different
There is a shirt showing some things you should avoid doing in Japan.

In Japan you should avoid

sleeping with your head pointing to the north
putting chopsticks straight up in rice (both related to Japanese funerals)
entering a house with dirty shoes on

those are the 3 absolute No-No's in Japan. I think it is a very usable list and decided to extend it for some other countries.
But what if you travel somewhere differently? Here now a helpful list with the 3 most important things you should avoid in other countries:

In USA you should avoid

Smoking in public
drinking in public
being a terrorist

In England you should avoid

saying you want to pay in euro
going out after 23:00
eating native food

In France there are certain taboos that you shouldnt go across, else they will regard you as a very wicked person and may not speak with you ever again. So avoid

not going on strike if any other working group wants you to
listening to non-french songs
speaking english. (at least i am pretty sure this has to be some sort of taboo because no french seems to be able to do so)

In Israel there are also certain things you should take care of. Do not

drive in buses, else you might get blown up
drive in cars because if there are other people in it, namely palestinians, you will likely get shot at with israely rockets
LIVE in either israeli or palestinian territory. In the first case you might get rocketed upon, in the second case your living room will get bulldozed away. This of course makes it hard to live in israel.... so just dont.

There is another country which has very strict rules that you should obey, if you do not want to get shot. If you are traveling to Irak, please make sure to avoid

another night, another concert: Zdob Si -Zdub

yesterday i was in club ost. thats a club here in vienna i didn't know about till now.
it somewhat shall give the visitors an eastern flair.
which works pretty well for non-easteners. i was there with some romanian girls.
they all told me it all doesn't "fit right".

anyway a nice club. i was astonished i didnt know it till now.
its not alternative like i like it but on the other hand its not that posh that i would immediately dislike it, maybe i'll once give it another try when there's no concert there.

but from the start. a friend of mine called me if i wanted to go out with him and a romanian girl he met at university some time ago to a concert. i had 3 choices what to do with my friday:
one: relaxed cinema/video watching with a friend
two: go to a free concert of the singer of "Die Sterne" in Chelsea
three: join him to a concert of some moldavian band.

luckily, i chose number three. i met them at the appartment of the romanian girl. there i discovered, there was not one, but 4 cute romanian girls living there, who were all going to go to the concert.
so we had a very nice company for the evening :). the only bad thing was that they often just spoke romanian, unfortunately my romanian is.... non-existent. though they were not really interested, they were still a nice company to have around.

so we then went to Klub Ost where Zdob Si Zdub, a band from moldavia was playing. you might know them, they were in one european song constest.
but fear not!
they are good! imagine flogging molly coming from the east. then you have Zdob Si Zdub.

likewise was the concert. very energetic. full room, cheering crowd. most of the people there being romanian. if you don't know flogging molly, imagine a band mixing up folk together with some punk and ska. then you get a pretty good idea what this was about.
sound check good, the band giving us a good shot of what they are doing. plus they played for nearly 2 hours, i think.
they were so good that i had to spill half of my beer when they demanded the crowd to jump at one place. this is quite embarrasing to happen to a concert-veteran like me ;)
the spilled beer did not really bother me, the music was too good for that.
i thought the band might have a chance to get real good feedback if they joined the deconstruction tour (a punk festival touring every year) this or next year. i think many punk-heads out there would enjoy them.

after the concert we crashed some birthday party and went on drinking until 4 in the morning when they threw us out. it was nice but i drank too much.

saturday then consisted only of sleeping , some chatting and eating good.

weedeater/Stinking Lizaveta in concert

today i watched weedeater in the arena.

well i should have.

but i didnt like them so i left early. pity in one way:
there even were more than 5 girls in the audience when weedeater started....
something i have not seen for quite a few concerts now ;)

thats the risk when you go to concerts of bands you do not know. you may not like them. but there are many examples when this calculation goes out positive.
but before weedeater, 'Stinking Lizaveta' were playing.
though their gig was not super, their performance was outstanding nonetheless!

Stinking Lizaveta consist of a couple and the brother of the guitarist playng e-bass (you know....cello type of bass), the couple both being...lez say 40+, but still rocking hard!
they put up a show that most other bands can dream of, which sort of compensated the lack of musical greatness from the eyes of a stoner listener.
though all their songs have much variety and idea, they are not what i dig nowadays. they more make a mix of noise-music, 80s speed metal riffs mixed with modern jazz.
it was fascinating that the audience didnt know them, but after the first song the band had won the heart of the people. thats the first time i experienced that. interesting.

plus, i would never have believed that fast 80s metal riffs can sound good. or that they have feeling to it. well they proved me, i was wrong.

looking at archimboldo

yesterday i paid a visit to an exhibition of archimboldo, a painter painting from bout 1540 to 1595 or something. what is really interesting is that he made surreal pictures, his portraits of people consisting of objects: like a portrait consisting of only wild animals, or a portry consisting of fruit.

with that he was really ahead of his time from our point of view, because many centuries passed until someone began painting in such a style again.

another funny thing he "invented" were the upside down pictures: paintings of fruit bowls that, if you turn them upside down show a face.

i moreso wonder about that because archimboldo was very popular back in his time and also famous, but when he died, he was forgotten and up until 1910 nobody knew who he was! i wonder how this has happened....

minor progress

what was happening yesterday?
i finally finished the psp game killzone liberation, one of the best portable games i know so far (including old-school gameboy).

thats about it on the private side. still need to look at the psp programming, too tired today.
if everything goes well this weekend then i will have some cool code on the psp for monday to show my colleages. but actually i hope the weekend runs great then i will be too distracted with a veery sweet girl i wanna get to know better, then no time for the psp :)

at work i finally had hands-on-experience why copy-constructors are so important in C++ while they are so minor in .NET, mostly having todo with (what else) the lack of garbage collection and the presence of pointers and explicitly reserved memory in c++. and even more so when you are using STL containers.
but more on that maybe at some other time.

i'll continue listening to fine dead meadow cd "old growth" now, isnt that a fine album. yes it iz.

psplink finally working

psplink is a fine utility with which you are able to run psp-compiled programs without the need of manually copying your EBOOT file to the psp. i finally managed to compile it.

i found a tutorial describing how to get to run this. unfortunately it is in french but for what did i learn it in school? ah yes, and for what do you have google.translate ;)

one thing to note:

with just having M33 custom firmware installed the psplink software will not work. you first need to install dark alex 1.50 kernel-addon. else psplink will not start.
after you installed this addon, you can run the psplink.

but psplink is more than just a tool with which you can run your applications remotely. it is also a failsafe mechanism if the program crashes your PSP to resetting it fast and easy.
plus you could also a debugger for debugging your program.
i didnt try it yet though.

after this is working now.... i could finally start developing :)

but for now i will leave it be, i had a constructive 3 hour firmware-architecture discussion today with my colleages for how we are going to implement this. this drained me a bit ;)

is the lack of insight that one can gain.

now i want to code some PSP games i also need further gimmicks installed on my PSP that will enable me to remote-debug my PSP programs and run my cross compiled programs on the PSP while they are still lying on my harddisk. for this there is a nice program called psplink. i think its the programs "fault" that nobody is using the oslib framework for the PSP i may have mentioned earlier for compiling on the pc, which is is supposed to support. because everybody seems to debug and test out the games with this psplink on their psp right away.

fine so i thought, well then lets install this wonderful thing. unfortunately, the program does not start on my M33-90. search me why, but from some tutorials for some different homebrew i now know i need the 1.50-add on for the m33-90. i just installed that, but what i really would like to know is: what is that thing doing? :) you dont really get some info about that

unfortunately, gettings things to work with homebrew always prooves difficult. real documentation is sacre, there are just occasional how-tos. what exactly is needed and stuff.
anyways, i am still motivated. still, i have to say, there are many dedicated guys out there doing this stuff and they also seem helpful and many of them seem to know what they are doing.

mmmh, today i celebrated the last exam a student friend of mine had. before that the day didnt work quite round, the celebration did not easy my uneasiness. not that it was the groups fault.

getting to some student restaurant with many fancy wancy dishes, but nearly all being only "light" food (ya know this esoteric african beans or goat cheese, but no hardcore beef dishes) for heavier prices, ordering a big beer and being told with a frown they only sell small beers did not raise my mood either. i hate that kind of clientele running and frequenting those places. why, and what i mean exactly by that, i ll maybe tell some other time.

now i am just getting my tipsiness down and listening to some Radio Moscow. check them out they are a nice band making energetic blues rock. no more, but no less.

then i ll just put myself to sleep and see what tomorrow brings. am a bit curious about creating some program for the PSP. patience my dear padawan...

PSP Homebrew child-steps

yesterday and today i tried to get some own coded programs for the PSP to run on my cracked PSP. buying that piece of hardware was one of the best investments i did in the last 2 years:
i spend nearly 2 hours per day in the public transport system, so having some gadget like this is essential: it really helps cut the time. and either i play some games, or i watch some movies. either way i sometimes am even disturbed when i finally reach home because i want to keep on watching/playing.

the only thing i hate about it is the reflecting display. more so as i know that it is only there because americans dig it so much that sony decided to give it a reflecting display.

please rest of the world: get it: reflecting displays are a pain in the ass. they are useless. the europeans know it (reflecting displays aren't liked in europe market research shows). because of reflection you see the contents of the screen not as good as you could. the europs already understood that.

ok, but back to the topic.
well, i of course cracked my psp for being able to do with it what i like, i mean: i bought it.
so now it is up to me to decide what i want to do with it.
and not fucking sony's decision what they think i should do with it. if they dont like what people are doing with it, they should stop selling it. they do not have to guarantee that it works if you do that to your PSP anyway.

this thing is able to play movies from the SD card, why wouldnt sony let me do so? it is my decision not theirs.

ok, so i cracked the thing. which is cool because now i can run my own-programmed software.... if i chose to create one.... and fiiiiiinally, about a year later, i had the interest to look at programming my own software for the PSP...

in former times i did not look because i did not know C programming, and had no clue about the words those PSP programmers used (like toolchain) that is needed to program it.
but noooow, with experience from my work, whoohooo, i finally have some understanding what they talk about and could dive into the subject.

and man i can tell you, i really needed that knowledge i gained in the last months. on sunday i spent about 2 hours installing the toolchain (all things needed for being able to compile PSP programs) on ubuntu.
granted i made it a bit stupid, because i adapted a windows/cygwin tutorial for my needs instead of keeping on looking for an ubuntu tutorial. but nevertheless: it then compiled. there is a neat tool called PSPSDK with which you are able to create PSP programs.

hooray, time to cheer.... i then wanted to get it to compile under windows. which i did on monday.
well, this took a while longer, because i decided to go for the
PSPDev Environment for Win32 from http://xorloser.com
after the cygwin variant did not work out right . then i tried to install oslib with it, which is a library for easily creating 2d games on the PSP.
the howto for setting it up was for the cygwin PSP variant so it took me a while to figure out what to do.
actually, it was not that hard: i just had to copy the .h files from the oslib/install folder to
x:\pspdev\psp\sdk\include
and the library files to
x:\pspdev\psp\sdk\lib
what i did wrong at the beginning was copying it to the x:\pspdev\psp\lib folder, but the SDK in the path is important! but if the install.bat works for you you wont need this i guess... but it didnt for me because of the paths being set wrong.

so i then was able to make my second hello world PSP app this time with this oslib libraries.
i am curious to know if i have enough breath to stick to coding some ACTUAL stuff with it or if i am just happy with getting it to compile.

Executing shell commands with wxWidgets with C++

ever wondered how to execute a shell comand via commandline that will not quit itself? i did have to get that to work and it took me quite a while. here my knowledge as its nowhere on the net so far:

i am talking about some command that will invoke something that will stay active as long you do not abort it (like with CTRL-C). Note: like a command that you, when in commandline type in, will not immediately return you to type something in but you have to abort it. in my case this was true to commandline commands for zeroconf (example for linuux is avahi)

if you want to run that on a button click, you of course cannot use system("yourCommand")
because then your button event will never end.
first idea would be now to create your own thread class via pthreads, and start the thread inside the button event, its execute routine calling this system("yourcommand").
unfortunately this will also cause wxWidgets to hang.
wxWidgets itself has an own command called wxSystem for doing system commands. running wxSystem("yourcommand") from your pthread class will also prove no success:
your wxWidgets window will freeze.
but you can do it with wxExecute()

i finally succeeded in executing the command with wxExecute with the wxAnythread flag or how it is called. this finally did the trick. and, oh yeah: do not try to run a wxExecute() in the OnExit() (?) method of your wxWidget app. It brought the app to crash under linux. but you can run it in the YourFrame:OnClose() method.

i found a nice C# blog with with some cool code demonstrating how to do a snake/nibbles in a simple windows.forms application.
fascinating idea :)

plus the small length of the code prooves how fast and easy you can write nice&fun applications in c#.

another concert, another band, same location

thuesday i watched SIENA ROOT in the arena. if you like deep purple from how they sounded in the early 70s, then you should check out that band.
they had a tough challenge, because topping Dead Meadow, the band i watched on monday was nearly impossible. there were even less people than on monday, i begin to fear that the arena will have to cancel their stoner events if so few people are interested in them.
if i could be convinced that there is a god i'd pray that they continue.
well, anyways:
the band had another obstacle which was that their singer had to return home because of a death case in the family. for other genres this would mean the end of the tour, but as they are doing psychedelic they just decided to do an instrumental tour.
i had my doubts if it could be good, because thats not what they usually do so but the concert was quite ok. yes, nothing compared to dead meadow, but they put effort into the show and made a good gig.
for 2 songs they even had a sitar player playing along with them. first song he accompanied was awful:
he wasnt in rhytm.
i am not sure if i can blame him, from his signs he did i'd say he didnt hear himself properly.
the second song he did with them was awesome.
again, like on monday nearly all songs played 10+ mins. musically they did a good performance and also techically there is nothing to complain about.
afterwards i bought a cd. supporting the band and stuff you know....
i am one of those idealists that like to buy CDs, especially to get unpopular bands supported. on the way home we listened to it on the stereo of the car.
of course the singer was on the record. when he began his lyrics we then looked at each other and said synchronously: "i dont like the voice" ;)
still the album is good. especially with that singer they sound very much like deep purple in the 70s. which isnt a bad thing. unfortunately i dig deep purple when they were founded, but not those later phases ;)

Dead Meadow live

on monday i had the honor of watching dead meadow play live in vienna.
for everybody not knowing them, and i am most certain most, if not all readers are in that category, go, get a cd and listen to it!. .... well, ok actually to be honest i am pretty sure if you do that without being into psychedelic or stoner rock you wont like them, they are quite a heavy intro to that genre. you could try it anyway i am pretty sure it helps a lot when you are stoned ;)

ok, back to the gig. it was in the arena, in my opinion the best place to play for a band in whole vienna
(and bands like bad religion and color haze agree with that) and the band started at about 10PM. the band that played before them were a local austrian band which meant that they sucked like nearly every austrian band does. unfortunately.
but at ten o'clock dead meadow began, and they are actually, as expected, a great live band. they performed for about 1,5 hours with many many songs with lengths of 10+ mins.
too bad there were quite few people. what a shame for such a great concert! the plus of this was that it wasnt too crowded and you could chill quite comfortable. at about the middle of the concert i was able to start me up from a light - into a medium deep trance which lasted till the end. good job boys ;)

after the concert i then had to find out that the band did not have any more cds to sell. really a shame. this has to be a blessing and a curse for a band if you run out of cds to sell on the tour:
a) it means, great many people liked your albums and you sold all that you produced,
but b) it means that there are EVEN MORE people who'd like to buy a cd and you do not have any meaning you dont get their money....

still, i think i will buy their latest album from amazon.

a while ago i had a quite interesting experience.
about a year ago i bought some herbs at www.azarius.net/ when a friend of mine bought some other stuff there. with some others i also ordered a package of tagetes lucida.
as i read already several times there are quite many not-that-dangerous herbs out there to get a nice trip out of. many of them having a hallucinogenic effect.
a quite popular one of them is salvia divinorum . i already tried it but that did not have any effect on me.... other than i felt stupid with the others who tried it out as we all sat there for half an hour silently in dim light staring at each other and just waiting and wondering what we'll do if it doesnt work. maybe it was because we decided for the alternative method of not-smoking it but putting it under the tounge.

because of my non-experiences with salvia i also didnt really much expect anything with those herbs including those tagetes lucida. but i wanted to try it out anyway because i was curious nonetheless. more so because tagetes lucida are very commonly grown in every garden :)

the whole packages were stored in my cabinet for about a year until i remembered them and tried it out. the first thing i noted about the tagetes were that there were MANY tweaks, which are of course quite unusable. you either smoke these tagetes or you make a tea out of it. if possible, you do both. but smoking real TWIGS isnt going to work.... so at first i had to sort those dried leaves from the twigs. i then made a tea and began to roll a kind of joint. i took about 60% of the package (i think they are 100 grams) for the tea which i boiled for more than 10 minutes, then keeping it hot for another 15 minutes. i think it was about a litre i had of the stuff. then i rolled a joint with some of the rest but just pure tagetes, nothing more.
i then began drinking the tea which... man that stuff has one of the most horrible tastes i know. so i had to put inside much lemon to neutralize the bad taste and then much much sugar to neutralize the huge amounts of lemon.... that made it a bit better. couple of minutes after the first cup i began smoking the joint. while smoking i still drank, then in the next 15 minutes i finished the tea. well, i am quite a fast drinker.
so what were the results?
ok for one, i felt dizzy. the only other result i got was that i began to sweat BIG TIME. which lasted for about an hour or so.
well, that wasnt really a successful experiment plus i had some of that stuff left. nothing that one would want to do again.
but what i realized was that those tagetes are quite easy to smoke. which is good because i have my problems smoking joints with tobacco, if i have to smoke a whole one. so i then planned to take my next joint with those leaves.

so far an uninteresting story. well the interesting part was when i smoked the stuff together with dope :)

or pot or... whatever now the correct description is i always mix it up (people tell me).

but thats another story because i dont wanna write anymore

wxWidgets and Eclipse

maybe this article can help someone trying to figure if to or how to run wxWidgets with c++ under linux/windows. but first some intro.

In the company i currently work in we are creating software for an embedded linux environment in c++.
Because of Development Tools available in Windows, (yes linux also has many development tools but most are not as good as the MS tools, i just say: debugger [you are of course invited to start an argue ;)]) i decided to make the code run on both platforms where possible.

then i had the idea to create a simulator with a GUI with which the status of the firmware can be shown . additionally it should be possible to "simulate" all non-hardware related parts on windows so that the software department could easily test their and our stuff.

my second approach to this GUI then were wxWidgets. Coming from .NET i only was familiar with windows.forms programming and very sparse MFC, but for one and a half months i also looked into creating swing applications in java. ok... well, i dont count my tries back in colleg, those were.... puny. as i am now coding c++ and no .NET anymore, the mono project was out of question for this.
so i started looking for something useful and after buzzwords like glade, gtk and wxWidgets flew by my head, i finally decided for wxWidgets as it seemed to be a quite easy framework.
unfortunately, getting wxWidgets running in no-unicode format on ubuntu proved to be a "bit" of a challenge. wxWidgets were the first tool i used so far that i had to compile myself before being able to use it. this is a very strange thing to do for a .NET coder.... well anyways, for windows, after converting the code to VisualStudio08 i got it to run quite fast, also thanks to the good wxWidgets Wiki in the net (though a bit dated).

On Linux i first tried the ubuntu apt-get installs for wxWidgets development. after loosing many hours (because of lack of no-unicode variants to install) i then decided to try to compile it myself. this gave me some weird errors because after compilation you then get a script to install this stuff.... but the install always failed, or lets say: after the installation the /include files werent where they were supposed to be. as an example, some of them were supposed to be in /usr/local/lib/wx/include/gtk2-ansi-debug-2.8
but there were only the directories without files existing.
i then found out with the help of my college that i needed to configure the install especially with a certain flag ... that should be set by default anyways. but apparently it wasnt, so i set that flag manually, set the other flags i needed like no-unicode, did another install and... it finally worked. hoooray. with wx-config --cppflags unicode=no i now could get the compiler flags i needed to include the wxWidgets stuff.
to get it running with eclipse (europa version) you just copy those generated compilerflags into : project properties -> c++ builder -> gcc c++ compiler -> miscellangelous
and do the same for the linker with wx-config --lib unicode=no or was it --libs.

now get your app running.... there are some designers out there to do so, but actually they are quite awful, arrh! nevermind, finally i had some things together. so far so difficult, but it got more complicated when i received an error when running my project. as soon as my code began with some manipulation of strings, it crashed, somewhere with basic size functions of std::string.
hm, bad... it took my another hour to find out with trial and error, that it worked if i changed my compiler options: i turned the debug level to maximum and turned of the optimisation. now it worked. hoooray....

see? i hate things like these. if you just use .NET or Java GUI Components , you do not need to spend HOURS getting some things to RUN. you just start and can concentrate on the framework. of course you neednt even COMPILE the things you wanna use. you just have them :)
but anyway wxWidgets is quite a nice tool in a way...

I managed to get some ugly-looking GUI with a webtreeview up and running in adequate time. well wxWidgets isnt bad i guess, but if you can decide, stick with doing such things with Swing or windows.forms they are much faster to do, plus are much easier to make look nice. plus if you wanna be cross plattform it seems you need some bigger testing on both machines. some events of the treeview as an example are different in linux to windows.

at least i now have some knowledge how to get GUI frameworks for c++ running on both major platforms. but actually for the future i would begin investigating how GTK behaves and works. it actually seems a much younger, stronger and active framework. wxWidgets is very old, documentations and stuff i find is from 10 years back (no kidding) so maybe i bet on the wrong horse.

Ubuntu and Wacom

yesterday i tried getting my Wacom Graphire4 Dashboard to work with ubuntu. actually.... not that i needed it, because actually all graphic programs i met for linux yet... plainly suck. the all-so praised GIMP is nothing compared to Paint.NET. Plus it is so-not intuitive. Well, there s not much to wonder about that fact i mean... its a linux program and by history linux programs are counter- intuitive :)
ok by now i should already have succeeded in getting all the linux phanatix out there hating me, at first saying GIMP (one kindof opensource-linux flagship as i understand) sucks then making the blasphemy saying that a .NET program (which implies bad-bad MS) is better and then even saying linux would be counter intuitive. ok, enough-having made-friends with the linux community so far.
nevertheless, i just wanted to see if i can get it to work under linux. which is as far as i am concerned very linux-geeky: trying to get something to work for linux which one actually does not really need, but it would be cool anyway.

for this i followed some instructions in the ubutnu forums. on doing this i also found an ubuntu tablet wiki page but i didnt need it with that forum entry so i skipped it.
i first installed the wacom-tools by the classic -by me already loved- sudo apt-get and then started tampering with the xorg.conf file. i did not really bother doing this.... well... i did not realize what it meant tampering with that file. :) (for all windows guys out there, i had to learn the hard way that this is a very very important file for the graphical component of linux ).
ok i did not really get the dashboard to work properly after trying the things the guy mentioned in the forum, but that did not really bother my because then i already had lost interest and shut down the pc for the day....

this resulted me booting today up without having a proper GNOME (graphical interface). gnome only in 800x600 no recognition of the graphics card.... no german keyboad.... bugger...
of course.... i did not bother for a backup of the file xorg.conf yesterday, but there were some backups under /etc/X11/ anyways... nice! unfortunately just taking THEM did not work.
first i tried deinstalling the wacom tools, then trying out all of these backup files.
no luck.
in the end i just reconfigured the X-server but at least he now reconizes my graphics card again. hooray ^^
thats enough tablet linux magic for me for now. i guess i will stick with drawing on windows. anyways the graphics programs there are plenty and also nice. i also can recommend ArtWeaver by the way, a nice freeware drawing program for making dashboard drawings. though, if i want to edit pictures legally then my first choice is paint.NET. maybe sometime in the future i will try to get paint.NET working under mono for linux ^^

Well ok, today something in german.

An sich bin ich ja (auch bedingt) durch meine mehr als 2-jährige Arbeit in einer Microsoft-Partner Firma (inklusive MS Zertifizierung) kein verbissener Microsoft und Microsoft-Produkt Hasser [und stelle damit uU das schwarze Schaf in der Firma dar ;) ].
So bin ich auch der Überzeugung das dort nicht nur inkompetente Leute herumsitzen und schlechte Software und schlechte Designs schreiben. Ja sie öffnen ihre Sachen nicht so wie es sein sollte, aber es verlässt einiges Gutes was auf Kompetenz schließen lässt die Schmieden in Redmond.

Wenn es jedoch um Basis-Technologien geht hat Microsoft jedoch wohl noch etwas nachzuholen wie man
hier sieht

Aus der Microsoft-Philosophie heraus erklärbar warum man diese Info bekommt, aber dennoch zu belächeln.

well i thought to myself:

ok, at first this should have been about what this blog shall be about. i even managed to write some ironic stuff and was managing to be quite funny. but then ... the mechanics of this blog came in my way.... why can't i mark with CTRL-SHIFT left cursor, and then delete it??? i mean... this preview is nice but.... fastly deleting like i am used to do it when programming is way more important!
