Savage Worlds rules

Finally after many years I made it enough of a priority to get around to some good old pen and paper roleplaying!

problem was that i did not find enough people interested to do it with me... even though the problem that nobody wants to master is solved quite easily: i do it if nobody else wants to do it and i quite enjoy it too.

well, finally i got enough people interested (or so i thought).

back in the old days i played DSA => Das Schwarze Auge, or The Black Eye as it is called in english. there are some computer games currently quite known, the Drakensang series, which play in that world.

DSA is nice, but I already mastered so many DSA games that i didnt want to do that any more... i wanted something new. being a hater of all D&D editions (ruleswise and settings wise) i needed to look elsewhere. i am quite interested in shadowrun but the complexity of the rules shocked me.
when you are playing as the master, then it is crucial that you have a good grasp of the rules. you actually should know most of them by heart.
but knowing rules by heart means investing the time to learn them by heart.

it turned out that the biggest challenge you will face when you want to re-start playing pen & paper roleplaying is that you just dont have the time anymore.
Reading rules is great, I like it. But I like the actual PLAYING more and when you are working and have a household and a girlfriend and whatnot - then time gets the limiting factor.

So I was very glad that the youtube gamegeeks channel brought me to a great solution to my problem:
Savage Worlds - a generic roleplaying game.
You can look at one of the excellent game reviews gamgegeeks did about a savage worlds game here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObVQ1ViDWuc

Generic Roleplaying game means it has no fixed setting:
its not a certain fantasy world that the rules it describes apply to, nor is it a fixed horror setting, or science fiction. you can use the rules for every scenario/setting that you want to.
It is rules-light which is good for people not having too much time (anymore) to study rulebooks.
character creation is easy: even when you have never done it, you will create your first full character in 20 minutes.

i immediately took savage worlds and used it in a modern-world mercenaries setting. and it worked out very well.

there are many settings out there you can use, many of them with rules extensions.

i will probably post the adventures i gave my group at some later point here. it turned out that modern world mercenary campaigns and adventures for roleplaying are very rare to find, so maybe somebody might be interested.

till then, best wishes
